Cable yarding systems are a versatile means for transporting materials in mountainous terrain in situations that does not allow for conventional harvesting methods such as ground skidding or shovel-logging. Cable yarding usually requires anchored guylines to support the tower and an anchor for the skyline. Anchored guylines usually depend on available stumps or trees. Where these are not available, equipment anchors such as bulldozers or skidders can be used. Equipment anchors, typically bulldozers or excavators, have known dimensions, weights and specifications, allowing estimation of anchor capacity with accurate knowledge of soil properties. This app is intended as an educational tool, not a design tool, to provide a sense of judgment for the impacts of equipment selection and soil properties on holding capacity of equipment anchors.
